Carter's Odyssey To Redemption and Life
After several weeks of rehabilitation and vetting and some training, Carter was onto a transport and off to his new home somewhere in New England.
Carter came to the Douglas County animal shelter last spring. He was one of several who arrived that week as strays. When Carter first arrived, he was like many others dogs, down trodden, dejected and afraid. Carter was under weight and being listed as a pit bull mix added another hurdle to be overcome in his ability to ever make it out of the shelter and to find a home.
For the next several weeks Carter slowing gained confidence as he slowly gained weight. His truly playful nature began to emerge and those of us who came to know him recognized him for what he truly was. Carter is just a big lug of a hound dog who loves to play and to just be allowed to be a dog. Carter loves people and he loved the opportunity to demonstrate his good qualities to volunteers and others when he had the chance to be taken out of his kennel and given quality time.
As the weeks passed Carter was networked and marketed with rescues adn the community, but Carter eventually found himself on the in danger list of dogs to potentially be put down for space. Prayers were offered up and finally prayers were answered.

In Early June, Christie and Drew offered to pull Carter and several others and foster them for the period required to have them vetted and transported to New England to new loving homes. Christie and Drew manage a dog rehabilitation, recovery and training center in neighboring Carroll county and they were gracious enough to take Carter and several others that day to begin their life altering journeys to their new homes.
After several weeks of rehabilitation and vetting and some training, Carter was onto a transport and off to his new home somewhere in New England after being fostered by another wonderful soul named Barbara in New England.

In my opinion, it is truly amazing what can be accomplished when dedicated people come together in a combined effort to save lives. From the dedicated shelter workers, to the dedicated volunteers, to Christie and Drew and North Star Rescue of New England. All of these links and relationships had to come together as a team to see Carter accomplish his new forever home and a future outside of the shelter and an early death.
Carter is now enjoying his new life playing and boating in Maine. That's right, Maine. Who would have ever thought that a big old lug of a flop eared hound dog from Georgia would not only be given a second chance at life, but that he would end up in a storybook ending.
Thanks to the combined efforts of many, Carter can now run and play and take boat rides and do all the things that a dog of his nature yearns to be able to do. in the end, this all came about by the combined efforts of many people involved in saving the lives of Douglas County Animal Shelter animals. And these same individuals continue to do it, one life at a time.
Congratulations to Carter and his new family. You fly now Carter! Live as you were meant to live! Enjoy your life and know that you have made more than one heart proud by your accomplishments and your loving spirit. you deserved a life and now you have one.....
