In Difficult Circumstances? The Way Out is Within

Problems Offer Opportunities

Imagine walking into a room with a young woman crying. As you draw closer to her, you ask, “What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” She answers…

“I had to choose between paying the light bill and buying groceries.” How many people have experienced this situation? This is a challenge that Tameka “L.A.” Anderson faced several years ago. This was also the opportunity she seized to change her life for the good of her family and herself.

“I didn’t have low income nor high income and didn’t qualify for government assistance… I thought to myself, ‘I never want to experience that again’,” said Tameka. As a single mom of three children, she is an entrepreneur and now philanthropist with the endeavor to help other single parents with economic empowerment, social services, counseling, and more through her nonprofit God’s Angels for Single Parents Ministries (GASP; www.gaspministries.org).

Tameka used the anguish of her financial hardship to create opportunity. She was employed but was not in a position to earn enough to meet the household needs of her family. She thought, “What do I have, or what can I do really well that will enable me to earn more money?” She assessed her skills, abilities, and talents to serve others and bring in more income. In this case, she began braiding hair. “I used to braid my daughter’s hair and received a lot of compliments. So, I started braiding hair for people.”

Tameka, a consultant, speaker, and author of her company L.A. Say Inc., shares her experiences and teaches other parents this concept through GASP.  If you assess your talents and skills, you will find that you are able to offer a service or product to others, which will help bring  income. Someone’s “problem” is your opportunity.
