The Skill of "Letting Go"

Letting go should become a skill that we all master. It's an exercise of faith that we all can develop for a successful life.

Whether we realize it or not, there are always spiritual, or “universal,” laws at work affecting our lives. If we understand them, these laws can prove to be very powerful for our success and the success of those around us. In contrast, they can be powerful in our failure and the failure of those around us.

Today, I want to briefly touch on the concept of “letting go,” which comingles two laws referred to as the Law of Detachment and Law of Least Effort.* These laws are simply stated in the Bible by Jesus, “Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on…” (See Luke 12:22-31).

How many times have we lost a piece of jewelry or car keys? We look in between the sofa, on the countertops, and all over trying to find them… and if we become frustrated or anxious, we may even panic a bit. However, after we release the stress and tell ourselves, “I don’t have time to look for it now,” or “I’ll find it later,” we find what we were searching for–either the same day or days later.

This same concept can be applied to just about every issue of life. If you are worried about the loan going through, let it go. If you are concerned about whether your business will succeed, let it go. After a job interview, anxious about hearing back from the potential employer? Let it go. Wonder how college tuition will be paid? Let it go. Wonder whether you’ll be healed of that illness? Let it go. Although you are “letting go” of the worry and concern about such issues, understand that you must do all that you know to do… just like losing that piece of jewelry. You retraced your steps, searched the countertops, and even the jewelry box with no trace of the item. In this case, you did what you knew to do… but say to yourself, “I’ll find that jewelry,” or “It’ll come up later.” Trust that you will, and let it go! Apply this similar concept to your life issues.

Even though it’s easier said than done, letting go should become a skill that we all master. It’s an exercise of faith that we all can develop for a successful life.
