CAC Awards Full Scholarships To Attend Summer Art Camp

DOUGLASVILLE, GA –The Cultural Arts Council Douglasville/ Douglas County and the Douglas County Department of Parks and Recreation joined forces once again to offer the annual intensive summer arts camp at Hunter Park (8830 Gurley Road, Douglasville, GA 30134), June 18, through June 22. Children, 7 – 11 years old, will spend an exciting and productive week exploring a wide variety of art disciplines with four expert and experienced teaching artists, Elisheva Pierce (Acrylic Painting), Elena Cox ( Voice and Music), Marion Greenwood (2D Design and Visual Art) and Courtnee Miles (Theater).

This year the CAC was happy to award four ART-portunity scholarships to deserving students in the Douglas County community. Two school scholarships were presented to Jadah Cooper and Jeselyn, both students at North Douglas Elementary and two community scholarship were presented to Emily Gay and Charnell Session. All four of these young ladies were presented their ART-portunity scholarship at the CAC’s Annual Meeting which took place on Thursday, June 14th. The ART-portunity Scholarship Fund was created to bridge the gap between art and opportunity for children with a passion to create and explore freely. All four of these young ladies embodies these key factors and come highly recommended. The CAC collaborated with Douglas County School System and Douglas County Art Teachers for the school recipients. Schools submitted their recommendations for winners. A five step criteria was put in place for the community scholarship submissions. Once all submissions were in, the committee reviewed the applicants and selected those students that excel in the arts and have a true passion for it. The goal of the Summer Arts Camp is to encourage and reveal the talents of every student and to highlight the impact the arts have on young children in developing their creative skills, social interactions and cultural awareness.

During the Summer Arts Camp, artists worked with each student each day on specific projects within their arts discipline that reflects and expands on a common theme. The theme this year was ART-cation: Passport to Summer. The camp concluded with a Celebration of Success – a small reception that took place on Friday, June 22 to which the public was invited. Attendees at the Celebration of Success had the opportunity to witness a memorable performance featuring the music and drama skills learned during the week as well as the student’s artwork in a temporary exhibit put together by the visual arts teachers.
