Dogs buried in City Cemetery

Indigent graves disturbed?

I recently helped with a cleanup effort in the city cemetery. I was sickened to find that someone has buried their dogs there. I know some think that’s ok and we all love our pets, but this was just blatant dis regard for the people buried in the cemetery. It is also against state law to bury pets in human cemeteries.

Many years ago, the county buried indigent people in that part of the cemetery. As time went by, this section filled up. The county then started burying the poor in another location. This person put his or her pets right were the poor are buried. There are a few markers around the spot where the dogs are, but most of the indigent had no money or family to mark their grave.

I remember about 20 years ago, the county exhumed the body of a young man who was found in the Chattahoochee River. He was believed to be murdered by the infamous Wayne Williams. One of many young men murdered and thrown in the river in the 1980’s. His body was buried by Douglas County because he was found on the Douglas County side of the river. He is only one of many buried there over the years.

You can see a few large stones placed where people were buried many years ago. One grave is marked by a veteran marker. Unfortunately, the rest are unmarked.

This person assumed that no one was buried there. You can never assume anything in a cemetery. If you didn’t pay for the space, it isn’t yours and more than likely belongs to someone else. Everyone deserves to be buried with dignity. Douglas County worked hard to make sure that these people were taken care of.
