Douglas Commission Plans To Roll Back Property Tax Rate

Rising property values in the county may still mean a tax increase for many, though.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Douglas County commissioners have announced plans to roll back property tax rates for the coming year.

But, rising property values throughout the county mean that many homeowners may still see an increase in their tax bill.

In a post on the county's website, commissioners said they plan to reduce the county's millage rate from 11.809 mills to 11.267 mills.

The millage rate is the amount per $1,000 that is used to calculate taxes on a property's taxable value. A higher rate means higher taxes and a lower rate means lower ones.

The commission meets to consider the rate at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Citizen's Hall of the Douglas County Courthouse.

For the vast majority of property owners in Douglas County, the rollback might not be enough to counteract rising property values.

For 2016, assessments in Douglas County increased for 74 percent of properties, decreased for 12 percent and stayed the same for 14 percent.

The increases reflect the growing recovery of the economy and the housing market, commissioners said.

The county's share of property taxes will remain about the same as last year after the millage rollback, the post said.
