Douglas County Deputies Make $1 Million Meth Bust

Douglas County Sheriff's Office: 65 pounds of meth was in a hidden compartment in suspect's vehicle.

Deputies confiscated more than $1 million in crystal methamphetamine in a Sunday traffic stop, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday afternoon.

Jose Garcia-Contreras of Eagle Pass, Texas, was arrested and charged with trafficking in meth and is being held without bond in the Douglas County jail., Lt. Glenn Daniel said in an email.

Lt. Daniel said the suspect was stopped by Deputy David Gray of the Felony Interception Narcotic Detection Unit at 8:09 p.m. Sunday for a traffic violation.

In the subsequent search, deputies found a hidden compartment in Garcia-Contreras’ 2006 Ford Freestar containing 38 packages of suspected crystal meth with a total weight of 65 pounds and a street value of more than $1 million, Lt. Daniel said. The packages tested positive for crystal methamphetamine.

Garcia-Conteras also was charged with having a false compartment in a motor vehicle.
