Douglas County Students To Celebrate School Lunch Week
The celebration will include special events including "blast from the past" meals and desserts offered to students.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Students in Douglas County schools are getting ready to celebrate a favorite part of any student's day — lunchtime.
Local schools will be recognizing National School Lunch Week on Oct. 11-13. Oct. 9 and 10 are holidays for students.
This year's theme, "School Lunch Recipes For Success," is about sharing favorite recipes of the past. The special days will emphasize healthy foods with an option for students to have "blast from the past" meals that they may remember from home or old-school cafeterias.

"School lunches are healthier than ever, with more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and less fat and sodium," said Danielle Scott-Freeman, School Nutrition Executive Director for the Douglas County School System. "Students enjoy home style choices like spaghetti, chicken teriyaki, turkey tetrazzini, and baked chicken. Yet, their all-time favorites are nachos, breakfast for lunch, several sandwich and salad options.
"National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program, and the appealing choices we offer."
The federally-funded National School Lunch Program provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day. The program, which has been serving the nation's children for more than 60 years, requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards like offering fruits and vegetables every day, serving whole-grain rich foods, and limiting fat, calories and sodium.
The “School Lunch Recipe for Success” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association. For more information, visit the Douglas County School System website or the system's school nutrition Facebook page.
