Douglas Investigators: Mailed Bogus Credit Cards Could Be Part of ID Breach

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says it has a team of investigators ”diligently” looking into recent reports of people receiving unsolicited fraudulent credit cards in the mail, including Green Dot and Visa cards.

“At this time we believe that it may be part of the personal information breach involving insurance companies operating in Georgia,” the agency said in a news alert. “Do not activate these cards or destroy them.”

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple calls from county employees, former employees and citizens of our community who have received Green Dot cards, Visa credit cards, had Fraudulent tax returns filed, and/or received other forms of fraudulent credit cards. These cards were received unsolicited and at this time we believe that it may be part of the personal information breach involving insurance companies operating in Georgia. DO NOT ACTIVATE THESE CARDS OR DESTROY THEM.

If you have received one of these cards since January 1, 2015 or you suspect that your personal information has been compromised as part of these crimes, please call the Criminal Investigations Division of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. A hot line has been set up at 678-486-1290 in response to these issues. When calling, please have your contact information available for investigators. We currently have a team of investigators that are diligently looking into the matter.
