Douglasville Man Killed By Deputies During Shootout: GBI

Deputies were investigating a New Manchester High School incident when they went to a Ferncrest Place house and approached the man.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — The Douglasville man authorities say exchanged gunfire with Douglas deputies at a Ferncrest Place home Wednesday has died, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Deputies arrived at the home around 12:15 p.m., when they say 29-year-old Steven Blunt pulled out a handgun during a short conversation and shot at the deputies, the GBI said. A deputy shot back, injuring Blunt, the GBI said. Blunt later died at the hospital, the GBI said.

The shooting came shortly after New Manchester High School was placed on a brief lockdown while authorities investigated a person with a gun call at the school's Special Olympics game. The person accused of having the gun ran from the event, and authorities traced evidence they say led them to the Ferncrest house. It has not been confirmed if Blunt was the person with a gun at the school.
