WHY: Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children 3 to 14 years old. Each day in the U.S. an average of 4 children are killed in traffic crashes and another 529 are injured. National data show that 73% of child restraints are critically misused, and last year’s Kids Safety First events saw a 92% misuse rate. When used properly, child safety seats reduce the likelihood of an infant under 1 year old being killed in a vehicle crash by 71 percent and for toddlers 1 to 4 years old by 54 percent. Booster seats reduce injuries by 45% over seat belts alone for children ages four to eight.
WHO: Child automotive safety experts will be on hand for interviews and demonstrations of proper child safety seat and booster seat use.
