Georgia Gravity Games Are Saturday In Douglasville

The games, which encourage excitement about STEM studies, are sponsored by Google, Georgia Tech and the City of Douglasville.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — The streets of downtown Douglasville will be alive with the sights and sounds of racing Saturday, when the 4th annual Georgia Gravity Games kick off.

Sponsored by Google, the event will bring together more than 50 race teams from throughout metro Atlanta to race the gravity-powered cars they've built.

The games are an educational, hands-on activity designed to get young people excited about science, technology, engineering and math. They are co-sponsored by Georgia Tech and the City of Douglasville.

The public is welcome to attend the games and cheer on the competitors.

In its three-year history, Gravity Games has attracted thousands of people to Douglasville, which is home to one of Google's 17 global data centers.

In addition to the races, there will also be exhibitors for Science Street, a STEM exhibit featuring activities and presentations by students from area universities and other organizations. Exhibitors include the University of Georgia's Center for Applied Isotope Studies, Atlanta Science Festival, Georgia Tech Motorsports and Douglas County's Parks and Recreation Department.

The Gravity Games begin at 9 a.m. with an opening ceremony that will include brief remarks from Google and the City of Douglasville. Racing begins immediately afterward. Based on the number of teams, organizers say racing likely will be finished by about 2 p.m.

Free parking is available in the deck at 6700 Church St. in downtown Douglasville.
