Hazel Peterson Barrett, 86 of Douglasville, passed away on Monday, Oct. 28, surrounded by her family. She was born May 9, 1927 in Cedartown, GA., and was the daughter of the late John B. Peterson and the late Louana Roberson Peterson. Hazel graduated from Cedartown High School. Soon after high school, Hazel met, fell in love with and married William C. Barrett. They celebrated almost 52 years of marriage, until his death in 1998. Together, they co-owned and operated Barrett’s Food Mart in Douglas County for many years before retirement. She enjoyed baking and sewing. Hazel was an animal lover who enjoyed sharing her blanket or lap with any one of her furry companions. She was a gentle, Southern lady, who loved her family, without exception, and was happiest spending time with her children and grandchildren. Hazel was a compassionate and giving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Hazel will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her children, Carol Barrett Ellis of Morrow; Bill Barrett and his wife, Gail of Sautee; David Barrett and his wife, Lori of Cleveland; and Rebecca (Becky) Barrett Earley and her husband, Marcus of Douglasville; her brother, Herbert Peterson of Jonesboro; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to her parents and her husband, Hazel was predeceased by her sisters, Vivian Cooper and Mary Elizabeth Bowen; her brothers, Edward Peterson and Everette Peterson; and her son-in-law, Garnett Ellis. The family would also like to thank and acknowledge Audrey Walker for her years of devoted care and dedication to Mrs. Barrett.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 1 until 3 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in Rosehaven Chapel with Chaplain Ron Daniel officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehaven Memorial Park.
