High Winds, Severe Storms Possible Monday: Georgia Weather

The National Weather Service says metro Atlanta could see wind gusts of up to 60 m.p.h., with some severe thunderstorms, on Monday.

ATLANTA, GA — Much of north Georgia, including metro Atlanta, was under a severe weather outlook Monday morning, with heavy winds expected and the chance of strong thunderstorms that could possibly spur tornadoes.

The outlook, from the National Weather Service, said Monday's primary mode of severe weather will be heavy winds — calling for gusts that could get all the way up to 60 m.p.h. A wind advisory is in effect for north Georgia's higher-elevation areas through 4 p.m.

A line of showers and thunderstorms associated with a strong weather system is expected to roll through north and central Georgia today. Isolated to severe thunderstorms are expected as a part of the system and, combined with strong winds, some situations may be right to cause isolated tornadoes, the NWS said.

In Atlanta, the chance for rain is expected to peak around 11 a.m., when there's a 78 percent chance of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service. Rainfall amounts between a quarter and a half of an inch are possible, according to the forecast.

That rain chance will gradually decrease through the late morning and early afternoon and mostly be gone by quitting time Monday afternoon.

Another potent weather system is expected to hit the region Wednesday night and Thursday. That system also is expected to bring thunderstorms into the Atlanta area.

The weather forecast for metro Atlanta for the rest of the week calls for clear skies Tuesday and much of the day Wednesday. But there's a 50 percent chance of showers Wednesday night starting at around 9 p.m.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely again for most of the day Thursday, starting around 9 a.m., and Friday as well. By the weekend, most of the storms will have made their way through the area. The extended forecast for Saturday and Sunday calls for clear and sunny skies both days.
