Jobless Rate in Douglasville Rose in May

The Georgia Department of Labor said unemployment was up across the state, too.

The unemployment rate in Douglasville and Douglas County rose significantly in May, according to data released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.

The rate in Douglasville climbed seven-tenths of a percentage point to 7.4 percent last month, up from 6.7 in April. The rate in May 2014 was 7.8, the data showed.

In Douglas County, the jobless rate was considerably less than the county seat’s, but still rose from 6.1 in April to 6.5 in May. The rate was 7.5 last May.

The labor department said metro Atlanta’s rate was up three-tenths of a point in May -- 5.9, up from 5.6 in April, but considerably less than May 2014 (6.9).

The rate rose as the labor force grew by 23,594 to 2,831,311, and while the new entrants are searching for work, they are counted as unemployed, the agency said.

Metro Gainesville had the lowest area jobless rate at 5.1 percent, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 7.7 percent.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for May was 6.3 percent, up from a revised 6.2 percent in April. It was 7.3 percent in May 2014.
