Cortney North, Lithia Springs High School Cosmetology teacher, was recently recognized by her peers from around the state for enthusiasm, dedication and professionalism that shines above expectations. The Trade and Industrial Educators of Georgia (TIEGA) named Cortney as the recipient of its 2015 New Teacher of the Year award.
This award was presented on July 13, 2015 at the TIEGA breakfast held at the annual conference of the Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education (GACTE). The purpose of this award is to “recognize an individual currently employed as a full-time classroom CTE teacher at the middle, secondary or postsecondary level who is new to the teaching profession with one to three years of experience.” North was presented a plaque and monetary award.

Mrs. North shares her teaching expertise and skills outside of the classroom as well. She presented “Technology in the Cosmetology Classroom” at 2014 GACTE summer conference, facilitated a series of cosmetology webinars through Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education Resource Network (CTAERN) and provided professional development sessions for the staff at Lithia Springs High School related to performance tasks, instructional planning, and making “real world” connections in CTE.
Mrs. North joined the Douglas County School System in 2008 as a media clerk at Yeager Middle School. She came to Lithia Springs High School in 2013 after twenty two years as a stylist and seven years as a salon owner. Ms. North completed the New Teacher Institute program for T&I teachers at Georgia State University, a rigorous teacher education program which prepares individuals from business, industry and health professions to transition to teaching. She holds a Master Cosmetology license and was a cosmetology student herself at Lithia Springs High School.
