State School Superintendent Richard Woods will be the honored guest at Mason Creek Middle School’s Veteran’s Day Celebration. Woods will speak during the event and present the school with three flags flown over the state capital.

The November 11 commemoration begins when military vehicles arrive and park under the school flag. During the intimate lunch, history students will connect with veterans and discuss their role in American history. At 2:15 pm, the formal program kicks off with a parade of Veterans featuring music from the eighth-grade band. A presentation of the colors by the Douglas County High School ROTC will follow.

In addition to State School Superintendent Richard Woods, students will also hear from Major John W. Kirkbride, US Army (Retired) of the 82nd and 101st Airborne. Major Kirkbride will encourage students to understand and recognize the importance of Veteran’s Day.

Mason Creek Middle School Georgia History teacher John C. Garner is excited to bring history to life for students. “Bringing history alive has been a big part of what we have been doing in our history classes here at Mason Creek Middle,” Garner says. “Our students are very excited about this and giving back to our veterans that ‘stood up’ for the rest of us. Our band, chorus, cheerleaders, ambassadors, and history club students have all worked hard over the last couple of weeks to show both our veterans and our State Superintendent of schools our appreciation for their service to every one of us.”

The Veteran’s Day Commemoration will be Monday, November 11 at Mason Creek Middle School, at 7777 Mason Creek Road in Winston, GA 30187.

Holly Springs Elementary School will also recognize Veterans at its annual Veteran’s Day Program this week. The program begins Friday, November 8 at 9 am in the Chapel Hill High School Auditorium.
