He was a US Navy vet who served in WWII, a lieutenant with the Atlanta Fire Dept. for 24 years and worked for Douglas Fire Dept. for 3 years

George W. Slay, age 89, of Douglasville, passed away, Thursday, February 5, 2015. He was born September 19, 1925 in Atlanta. He was a Veteran of the US Navy, serving in WWII, a Lieutenant with the Atlanta Fire Dept. for 24 years and during his career he was a fire investigator and when he retired he was an arson inspector. He worked for 3 years with the Douglas County Fire Department. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife of 72 years, Carolyn Summerlin Slay of Douglasville; sons and daughters-in-law: Steven Slay and his wife, Connice, of Aragon, GA, Ben Slay and his wife Rebecca of Villa Rica; daughter and son-in-law: Susan Durrant and her husband, Joe of Douglasville; grandchildren: Benjamin Slay and wife, Angela, Brian Slay and wife, Cathy, Scott Slay and Shannon, Amy Pharr and husband, Butch; great grandchildren: Benjamin, Megan, Autumn, Terry, Jacob, Zachery, Jessie and Katlin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. Slay, Sr., and Cora Lee Freeman Slay, and sisters, Allene Johnson and Helen Ruth Braum.

Funeral service was held Sunday, February 8, 2015 at 2pm at Hightower’s Memorial Chapel with Reverend Charles Gibbs officiating. Interment followed in the Central Baptist Church Cemetery, with Ben Slay, Brian Slay, Scott Slay, and Benjamin Slay served as Pallbearers.
