Navy Vet Philip ‘Billy’ Newton Wood, Sr., 91, Dies

The funeral service was on Tuesday, Nov. 26 follow at the Rosehaven Chapel with Reverend John Pinson officiating.

Philip ‘Billy’ Newton Wood, Sr., 91 of Douglasville, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24. He was born Aug. 13, 1922 in Douglasville. He was a devoted father and husband. He loved spending time with his family, enjoyed gardening and beekeeping. He was a graduate of Young Harris College where he was a founding member of the SPAT Club, an honors service fraternity. He graduated with his pharmacy degree from the University of Georgia and was a life-long pharmacist. He served his country as a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on an LST as an LTJG in the Pacific Theater during the battle of Okinawa. Mr. Wood was a member of the Douglasville First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents, William and Hannah Burton Wood; his beloved wife, Helen Hopkins Wood; and his daughter, Rebecca Faye Wood Heard.

He is survived by his sons, Philip Wood, Jr. and his wife Martha of Madison, GA, and Barry Wood of Douglasville, GA; grandchildren, Keith Heard, Phyllis Heard Archer, Sara Wood, Annie Wood, Joshua Wood and Raymond Wood; a sister, Elizabeth Vining of Palatka, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mr. Wood to the Douglasville First United Methodist Church Brotherhood Class, 6167 Prestley Mill Road, Douglasville, GA 30134.
