Officer Did What He Was Trained To Do: Sheriff After Shooting
Douglas Sheriff Tim Pounds said officers did what they were trained to do during a fatal shooting at the Sheriff's Office Wednesday.
DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds said he looked at deputies' body cameras, frame by frame, and "they did what they were trained to do," when they shot and killed a man Wednesday, who was barricaded in the station's public restroom. One deputy was stabbed twice and two were transported to a local hospital with injuries.
Justin Oakes, 32, dialed 911 after spending several hours in the public bathroom at the Sheriff's Office. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to investigate the shooting. At approximately 2:15 a.m., two deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call.
According to the GBI, Oakes entered the lobby of the sheriff's office at approximately 10:25 p.m. on Tuesday. Oakes made numerous 911 calls from the bathroom. When the two deputies arrived at the sheriff's office, Oakes was barricaded in the public men's restroom off of the main lobby of the building. The two deputies were able to push their way into the bathroom. Oakes had a knife and one of the deputies deployed a taser.
