“We are really excited about where our program is at this point in time,” said WGTC head coach Walter Dunson. “I’m really impressed with the way that our team has come together and we anticipate more great things to come as we look ahead to the official start of our program next fall. We’ve had great crowds at our previous scrimmages and we invite local fans to come out and get a glimpse of what West Georgia Tech football will be all about.”
Dunson will be returning to his roots, where he helped lead the Central High School Lions to two-consecutive state championships in 1986-87, the only state titles in school history, under legendary head coach Ronnie Burchfield.
“It’s really special for me personally to be able to come back to Lion Valley and bring this football team to the place where I played high school ball,” Dunson said. “Coach Burchfield was such an inspiration to me. He was a father-figure for me and so many others. I heard him say every day ‘to show pride and show class,’ and that is something we have tried to instill in our program. (Central High School Principal) Dana Harman, coach Rico Zackery and everyone at Central High School has been extremely hospitable to us and we want to thank them for their partnership with Saturday’s game.”
Dunson has two sons on the Central High School football team, Josh and T.J.
West Georgia Tech announced that the school would add a football team last December. Since the school has seen more than 100 student-athletes join the squad and enroll at WGTC.
West Georgia Tech will begin playing competitively as a NJCAA Division 1 member next fall, becoming the second D-1 junior college in Georgia. Georgia Military College is the other football-playing member.
