WW II Vet James 'Jake' Cary Whitfield, 86, Dies

His graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. at Mozley Memorial Gardens with Rev. R.C. Watson officiating.

James ‘Jake’ Cary Whitfield, Sr., 86 of Lithia Springs, passed away Sunday, Oct. 20. He was born Jan. 17, 1927 in Atlanta.

Mr. Whitfield was a veteran serving during World War II in the U.S. Army for a short time before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force and retiring in 1972. He was a middle weight boxer during his military career. Mr. Whitfield retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a supervisor at the General Mail Facility in Atlanta. He was an avid runner, running in many races with too many trophies to count, and was a member of the DC Coaster Running Club. Jake was also a member of the Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty Whitfield and his son, Jamie Whitfield.

He is survived by his daughter, Jerra Waddle; granddaughter, Shannon Waddle; granddaughter, Freya Lowery and husband Jason; and great-grandson, Bryant Lowery.

His graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. at Mozley Memorial Gardens with Rev. R.C. Watson officiating.
