Your five-minute guide to what's happening today in Duluth.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, Duluth! Let's get you all caught up to start this Thursday, October 7 off on an informed note. Here's everything happening today in Duluth.

First, today's weather:

Heavy rain and a thunderstorm. High: 77 Low: 67.

Here are the top stories today in Duluth:

  1. The Gwinnett County construction superintendent, Alphie Rivera, has been cast on the new season of Tough as Nails that will be broadcasted on CBS46. Rivera was one of 12 candidates selected for this new season. (11 Alive)
  2. Several Metro Atlanta school boards, including Gwinnett County, have been receiving many politically motivated threats and harassments concerning masks and other COVID-19 response measures. These same school boards are applauding and agreeing with the new federal plan to address these threats against school employees. Gwinnett County specifically was cited in a letter to President Joe Biden requesting help for unruly schoolboard meetings and harassments. Tarece Johnson, a Gwinnett County school board member, has received a lot of harassment online and in person because of her political views. The Atlanta school boards have reached out for federal help regarding these situations, and federal officials will be starting strategic plans within the next 30 days to get law enforcement involved. ( The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  3. Yesterday, I reported that Gwinnett County is currently weighing the odds of decriminalizing possession of small amounts of cannabis. Today, we have found out that county leaders have decided to postpone the vote by a month. Stay tuned for updates! ( The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  4. Last week, I informed you about a $5,000 reward for missing turtles in a John's Creek park. This week, the turtles have been returned safely to their habitat. (WSB Atlanta)
  5. The Gwinnett Board of Commissions has approved raises for all county employees. There is a 4% raise coming for many county workers and an 8% raise for public safety personnel. (Gwinnettdailypost.com)
