Here are the top stories today in Duluth:
- Next week on Tuesday marks the first of six digital learning days for all Gwinnet County students. The digital learning days, as you may already know, are scattered throughout the year once a month. Students will be expected to take part in asynchronous homework that their teachers have posted on eClass. During those digital days, Gwinnett County Public Schools transportation teams will be running their normal routes to deliver free meals to students. Drivers will start their normal routes around 10:45 until noon delivering breakfast and lunch. (Press Release Desk )
- Gwinnett BOC Chair Nicole Love Hendrickson has commented on a recent transit referendum request for the 2022 fiscal year saying that a huge rail project will not be taking place this year due to uncertainties revolving around the pandemic. However, she did make it clear that she is very excited to start talking about building railways and other major transportation when we have more of a projection of how the pandemic will change traffic patterns in the Gwinnett Place area and our everyday lives. She also mentioned that short-term projects for transportation expansions are being considered at this time. (Gwinnettdailypost.com)
- Gwinnett County is seeking your input on the vision of redevelopment of Gwinnett Place Mall. There will be an open house at the mall this Friday evening from 6 o'clock until 8 o'clock, followed by a sunset showing of the movie "Minari." Translators for many languages will be present to encourage people from all cultures to attend. This event is the first of many during "welcome week," in an effort to celebrate Gwinnett's immigrants, refugees, and long term residents. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- The first Gwinnett County homeless shelter for women and children, HomeFirst, has finally opened its doors for operation. The shelter will be open for community resources, but will mainly focus on women who have children to help them with the difficulties they face while experiencing homelessness. The Primerica Foundation, United Way of North Georgia, and Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners have been working on this project for three years, and they are all proud and excited for the doors to finally be open. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- After last week's city council meeting, the City of Duluth approved a mini warehouse and some storage units to be built by Legacy Land Holdings on Buford Highway. No outdoor storage will be allowed, and the city is planning on keeping 55 gallon rolling bins to reduce garbage nuisances. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)
