From Nurse to Legend: Barton Field Tells the Transformative Tale of Clara Barton

The Refuge Theatre Company proudly presents Barton Field, a riveting new production by playwright John Ammerman that reimagines the extraordinary life of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. Opening November 14 at The Academy Theatre in Hapeville, this one-woman historical drama promises a deeply human portrayal of a woman who changed the course of history through compassion, courage, and conviction.
Set in Georgia during the summer of 1865, Barton Field transports audiences to the haunting grounds of Andersonville, where Clara Barton labors relentlessly to identify and bury the fallen Union soldiers. As the play unfolds, viewers witness both the public and private struggles of a woman who defied societal expectations to serve those in desperate need.
The
role of Clara Barton is brought to life by acclaimed Atlanta actress
Kathleen McManus, whose commanding presence and emotional depth
illuminate Barton’s heroism and humanity. Under the direction of Elisa
Carlson, the production combines vivid storytelling with immersive
multimedia design by Larry Robertson, original music by Clark Taylor,
and evocative costume design by Amy Wachtel. Together, these creative
forces create a powerful sensory experience that bridges history with
the present day.
Running 70 minutes, Barton Field is more than a historical tribute—it’s a celebration of the indomitable spirit of a woman once called the “Angel of the Battlefield.” It resonates not only with history buffs, but with nurses, educators, and all who believe in the transforming power of service and humanity.
Barton Field runs November 14–23, 2025, at The Academy Theatre, 599 N Central Avenue, Hapeville, GA. Performances are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM, and Sundays at 3:00 PM.
