Johns Creek Renames Newtown Park Amphitheater

The Mark Burkhalter Amphitheater honors the former Georgia House speaker who wrote legislation to incorporate the city.

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- The city of Johns Creek has renamed one of its popular amenities to honor the man who had a hand in the municipality's incorporation.

The Newtown Park Amphitheater has been renamed to the Mark Burkhalter Amphitheater. The unveiling was held Saturday, Sept. 24.

The renaming honors the former speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives who wrote the legislation to incorporate Johns Creek as well as authored the City’s Charter.

Burkhalter was honored by the Georgia Department of Transportation in May when the agency held a ceremony to dedicate a portion of S.R. 141/Medlock Bridge Road to the former state legislator.

Mark Burkhalter Highway starts at Johns Creek's southern city limits at the Chattahoochee River and extend to Medlock Bridge Road's intersection with S.R. 120/Abbotts Bridge Road.

Burkhalter, who serves on the State Transportation Board, is a senior advisor in the public policy and regulation practice at Dentons.

He served 18 years in the Georgia General Assembly before moving into the private sector. Burkhalter also operated a successful real estate development business.
