Cobb County Man Sentenced to Prison for Drunk Driving

Charles Emerson Williams was acquitted of aggravated assault on a peace officer, but convicted of eight other crimes.

A Cobb County jury has convicted a Marietta man of DUI, fleeing from police, and six other related offenses for a February 2014 vehicle chase, the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Charles Emerson Williams, who has a long rap sheet in Cobb County and Atlanta, was sentenced to five years in prison and a further five years on probation on Thursday following his conviction last week, the office said.

On the morning of Feb. 11, Cobb County police found Williams driving his 2004 Chevrolet Silverado at a high rate of speed on the wrong side of Austell Road. Police gave chase, with Williams running through a stop sign and eventually ramming into a police cruiser. The collision caused $3,000 worth of damage, the DA’s office said.

The jury acquitted Williams of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

“It’s a miracle nobody died that night on Austell Road,” ADA Shep Orlow said during the sentencing hearing Thursday morning. “It is clear, throughout his history, he has shown nothing but contempt for law enforcement.”
