The victim was able to walk and speak normally and was taken to an area hospital by his mother. Once there, doctors determined his injuries were more serious than originally thought and that he had been hit by a small-caliber bullet, not a BB or pellet.
He was taken to Children’s at Egleston Pediatric Hospital in Atlanta, where he was originally listed in serious condition.
Police are continuing to investigate and asking the public for help identifying who may have fired the shot that hit the little boy.
It was the second shooting incident in Gwinnett County involving a child in as many days.
On Friday, an 11-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself while playing with a handgun in his family's Norcross garage.
