Georgia Candidate Wouldn't Let Zombies Vote

The tongue-in-cheek ad is part of Lawrenceville state Rep. Buzz Brockway's campaign for Georgia Secretary of State.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA β€” Georgia may be the home of "The Walking Dead." But one candidate hoping to head up the state's election system is making it clear that, on his watch, no zombies will be allowed at the polls.

Just in time for Halloween, state Rep. Buzz Brockway, a Republican from Lawrenceville, has released a light-hearted ad in his quest to become Georgia's next Secretary of State. Republican Brian Kemp is vacating the office to run for governor.

The ad tackles voter fraud β€” a pet issue, of sorts, for Republicans who have made political hay off of the idea that people voting illegally is a problem nationwide, particularly in major metro cities. Critics argue the problem is overblown and call GOP efforts to crack down on voter fraud a veiled attempt to tamp down Democrat-friendly voting among the poor and minorities.

In the ad, a dream sequence sees Brockway seated at the Secretary of State's desk as a shambling, dead-eyed zombie β€” who just happens to be wearing a Hillary Clinton t-shirt β€” limps into his office. The ghoul slaps down a blood-covered voter registration form on Brockway's desk. (SIGN UP: Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. "You again?" Brockway says. "Look, undead is still dead. You can't register to vote."

He goes on: "Look, fella ... as long as Buzz Brockway is Secretary of State, the dead won't vote in Georgia. Have you tried California?"

The zombie seemingly likes the idea, rushing out of the office and leaving a dismembered arm behind.

In a news release, Brockway said voter fraud would be a key concern if he's elected.

"While our ad is meant to be tongue-in-cheek in order to bring light to this issue, protecting the integrity of our elections is very serious and it will be a top priority for my administration," he said.

In the election, Brockway faces fellow Republicans including fellow state representatives Josh McKoon and Brad Raffensperger and Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle. Democrats who have declared for the post include former U.S. Rep. John Barrow and former state Rep. Dee Hawkins-Haigler.
