Gwinnett Accepts Money To Help Build New I-85 Interchange

The interchange will be at Gravel Springs Road, near Buford.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — Gwinnett County has accepted $2 million from the state to help build a new interchange on Interstate 85.

The state grant will help buy property needed for the interchange, which will be on I-85 at Gravel Springs Road.

That's in Buford, near the Mall of Georgia.

"This grant from the Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority will allow us to begin acquiring right of way for this joint project with the state," said District 4 Commissioner John Heard.

Gravel Springs Road is on the state highway system as State Route 324.

Gwinnett County will fund the overhead costs associated with acquiring land, while state and federal money will be used to pay for the value of the land itself.

The new interchange is estimated to cost $19.5 million, in a combination of federal, state and local-option sales tax funds.
