Gwinnett Memorial Service To Honor Lawrenceville Native

Spec. Kyle E. Gilbert died as a result of friendly fire last September in Bagram, Afghanistan.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA -- A Lawrenceville native will be honored Monday when Gwinnett County holds its annual Memorial Day service at the county's monument to local military personnel who paid the ultimate price.

Army Specialist Kyle E. Gilbert will become the first name added to the memorial since 2011.

Gilbert died as a result of friendly fire last September in Bagram, Afghanistan.

This year's Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the memorial, at the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Center.

The center is located at 75 Langley Dr. in Lawrenceville.

The public is invited to the ceremony to pay tribute to Gilbert and other fallen heroes who have sacrificed their lives to protect the nation.

The keynote address will be given by Brig. Gen. Thomas Carden, Assistant Adjutant General of the Army and Georgia Department of Defense Commander in the Georgia Army National Guard.

Other officials scheduled to speak include Gwinnett County Commissioner Tommy Hunter and the mayors of Lawrenceville and Lilburn. Law enforcement honor guard members also will take part in the ceremony.

For those who can't attend in person, the Memorial Day ceremony will be televised at 7:30 p.m. on May 25 on TVgwinnett, the county’s local government access cable channel.

The Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial honors all Gwinnett residents who have died in the line of duty in military or public service. The memorial opened in 2003 and was built with funds from private donations and Gwinnett County government.
