Sorority Members Celebrating 50 Years of Sisterhood and Service

And, Still They Serve Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated

Sheryl Byrd, Zelda Neal, and Mary Robinson have one thing in common besides their love of the strong and gorgeous plant known as the ivy. They are each celebrating 5o years of Service To All Mankind as members of the nation’s first sorority for African-American women, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Byrd, Neal, and Robinson are proud members of Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter (“UAO”) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Gwinnett County’s first Greek letter organization for African-American women. They selflessly join hands and hearts with UAO chapter members to improve the quality of life and living for all. Each is a servant to community service and is now revered as a “Golden” member of the international service organization. The sorority sisters will be honored at a special UAO luncheon on Saturday, July 11.

About Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter

On January 29, 1994, thirty aspiring professional women chartered the Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter in Lawrenceville, Georgia. The group gathered to implement and support the international programs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated as they pertain to the needs of Gwinnett County, Georgia. Today, Upsilon Alpha Omega, the first African-American Greek-letter organization in Gwinnett County is over 250 members strong, and has made a significant impact on the community.
