Grayson-Roswell Football Wager Results in Food for Needy

State senators who represent the two schools ponied up donations, and $500, for North Fulton Community Charities.

Grayson, GA -- Last week’s state semifinal game didn’t go the way the Grayson Rams wanted it to go. But a friendly wager on the game by Grayson’s state senator resulted in a win for a north Fulton County food bank.

Sen. P.K. Martin, of Lawrenceville, challenged his colleague, Sen. John Albers, whose district includes Roswell, to raise as many packaged food donations as he could before last Friday’s game. Roswell defeated Grayson in heartbreaking fashion, scoring on a “Hail Mary” touchdown pass with just 10 seconds left in the game.

Under terms of the wager between the two GOP lawmakers, the loser would deliver all the food donated by both schools to a food bank of the winners’ choice, along with a $250 donation.

On Friday, Albers confirmed that Martin had lived up to his end of the bargain.

“When Sen. Martin challenged me to a food drive I saw it not only as a fun way to give back to our communities during the holiday season, but also as a way to boost moral for those less fortunate,” Albers said in a news release. “I want to thank the fans of both schools for their contributions as well as congratulate Roswell High School on their wonderful generosity.”

Albers even matched Martin’s gift, writing a $250 check of his own to North Fulton Community Charities.

Roswell will face Colquitt County Saturday at the Georgia Dome for the Class AAAAAA state championship.
