City Police Win Shout-Out From Public in Response to Dallas

Dozens of Facebook readers thank Marietta cops for their service following the Thursday night ambush of Dallas police.

Marietta, GA — In the wake of the killing of five police officers Thursday night at a protest rally in Dallas, residents of Cobb County expressed their support for Marietta's officers on the Facebook page of the city's Police Department.

In a Facebook post that went up Friday morning, the Marietta Police Department asks residents to keep the city's officers in their thoughts and prayers. "This morning our officers are coming to work with heavy hearts," the department says. "We are here to protect and serve you, Marietta. Keeping you safe is our primary goal."

According to news reports, at least two snipers opened fire on police and protesters in downtown Dallas during a rally Thursday to protest the shooting deaths of two black men earlier this week by police in Minnesota and Louisiana. Five officers died and seven others were wounded in Dallas; the Dallas police chief said three suspects were in custody, though others may be at large.

News reports identified one suspect Friday morning as Micah Xavier Johnson of Mesquite, Texas. He was killed by a police bomb squad's robot after a standoff in a Dallas parking garage with SWAT officers.

The Dallas shootings were the deadliest attack on law enforcement since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The police closed down a 25-block section of downtown Dallas on Friday morning.

In Marietta, Facebook readers overwhelmingly expressed thanks to the city's police for the work they do every day and pledged to pray for officers in Marietta, Dallas and across the country. As of 12:15 p.m. Friday, the department's Facebook post on Dallas had drawn 116 shares and 68 comments.

"Thank you for all of your service to our city," one person wrote in the comments section. "We have an amazing police force. Prayers that you stay safe as you try to do your job today!"

"Prayers and support for our men in blue," another person wrote. "Thanks for always protecting us. I greatly appreciate your service."
