House Passes Marietta Lawmaker's Bill to Fight Gang Activities

Rep. Bert Reeves says Georgia is facing a crisis from prisoners who use cell phones to coordinate their gangs outside prison walls.

ATLANTA -- The state House of Representatives has passed a bill authored by a Marietta lawmaker that would stiffen penalties on prisoners who use cell phones to coordinate gang activity.

House Bill 874 passed on Wednesday by a 106 to 60 margin, reports the AJC.

The bill from Rep. Bert Reeves, R-Marietta, would impose a minimum five-year sentence on inmates who use cell phones to operate their gangs outisde prison walls. Reeves said the only way to stop prisoners from engaging in the crime is to lengthen their sentences.

Most of the ”no” votes came from Democrats, including state Rep. David Wilkerson of Austell.
