Marietta High Student to Perform on Broadway on Monday

Shelbea Owen is one of two Georgia students competing in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards.

Shelbea Owen, a rising senior at Marietta High School, is in New York City this week competing in the 8th annual National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also called The JimmyTM Awards.

Shelbea and Will Davis, a recent graduate of Buford High, are representing the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards (the Shuler Hensley Awards) at the competition.

Shelbea won the 2016 Shuler Leading Actress award for her role as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray, and Will won the 2016 Shuler Leading Actor award for his role as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde in Jekyll & Hyde.

Shelbea and Will’s journey began this past Sunday, June 19, as they traveled to New York City to participate in a week long theatre intensive that concludes with a one-night only showcase on Monday, June 27 at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway. They are competing against a group of more than 60 young performers from across the country for the coveted JimmyTM Award, as well as merit scholarships and professional opportunities.

“It is such an honor to travel to New York this week and to work with some of Broadway’s top professionals at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards,” said Shelbea. “This opportunity means so much to me as I pursue my dreams of being a Broadway performer.”
