Seventh Grader Emma Camp of The Walker School Wins District-Wide Water Essay Competition

The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District 2014 Water Essay Contest challenges them to students to think critically about water

Emma Camp (on right in photo), a 7th grader at the Walker School in Cobb County has been named the District-wide winner in the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District 2014 Water Essay Contest. She received a $500 prize for her essay.

This is the 13th year MNGWPD has sponsored the annual Water Essay Contest. Over the years, the Water Essay Contest has engaged thousands of middle school students and challenged them to think critically about water and our region’s water resources. This year’s contest focused on the importance of water quality and water quantity. Students were asked to address the following statement, “Explain why water quantity (how much water we have) and water quality (how clean the water is) are equally important. Over 1,900 students from across the metropolitan area submitted essays.

The MNGWPD awards a prize to one student from the City of Atlanta and one to each of the 15 member counties. Domenica Weems (on left in photo), a 6th grader at Turner Middle School in Douglas County was chosen as Runner-up.

An awards reception was held Thursday December 4, 2014 in the South Wing of the Georgia State Capitol to honor all the contest winners and to announce the District-wide winner and Runner-up. Each county and City of Atlanta winner received a $100 prize. The District-winner received an additional $400 prize.

The essay contest is one of many initiatives conducted by the MNGWPD to raise awareness for conservation efforts and preservation of water quality in metro Atlanta.
