Commissioners voted Tuesday to spend $922,500 to clear the 223-acre property at 4511 Jones Bridge Circle, the Gwinnett Daily Post reported.

The move is the first big step toward converting the property into a new park since the county closed on its purchase in February from the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. The county paid $14 million for the property.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported demolition will include the swimming pool, tennis courts and several buildings, and is expected to be completed by the fall. The AJC said a chapel would be moved.

The 223-acre property has approximately 2,140 linear feet of river frontage along the Chattahoochee River.

Citing ongoing operating losses, the United Methodist Church conference voted last June to close property, and preferably sell it to the county as a park.

The property was once owned by Miss Ludie Simpson, who deeded it over to the United Methodist Church so it would remain as she requested, “to keep the land so that all people could enjoy God’s beautiful creation.“
