Mother's Day is the second-biggest holiday of the year for florists. Here's where to grab a bouquet.
Motherβs Day is May 12 and local florists are already gearing up for what will be a busy month.
Jenny Scala, spokeswoman for the Alexandria, Va.-basedΒ Society of American Florists said Motherβs Day flower and plant sales are second only to Christmas. Β Mother's Day falls just above Valentineβs Day for sales volume, which is third on the list of busiest days for florists.

Orchids, lillies, tulips, roses, irises and calla lillies are among the most popular flower choices for Motherβs Day, according to ProFlowers.com.
According to the website, hydrangea, azaleas, chrysanthemums and blooming kalanchoe plants re amongst the best selling plants for Motherβs Day. Scala said the floral industry is global and there wonβt be a shortage of flowers to go around.
Motherβs Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914, according to History.com.
According to AboutFlowers.com, 87 percent of people shopping for Motherβs Day will buy flowers or plants. Of those shoppers, 70 percent will be shopping for their own mother, 24 percent will be shopping for their mother-in-law and 23 percent will be shopping for their wives.
