Bobbi Kristina Brown: Cause Of Death Released

The daughter of singers Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston was found unresponsive last year in a bathtub at her Roswell, Ga. home.

ROSWELL, GA -- Following a ruling made Thursday by a Fulton County Superior Court judge to unseal the autopsy report of the late Bobbi Kristina Brown, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office has done just that.

The report states Brown's cause of death was lobar pneumonia caused by the "immersion of face in water complicating mixed drug intoxication" and the delayed effects of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, or brain damage caused by the loss of oxygen.

An underlying cause of death, the office states, is a condition that triggers the downhill course of events leading to a person's death and in this case, "is the immersion associated with drug intoxication."

Those drugs involved include marijuana, alcohol, benzoylecgonine (a cocaine-related substance), benzodiazepines (medications used for sedation or to treat anxiety) and morphine. The office notes it could not determine if the morphine found in Brown's system stemmed from heroin use.

The pneumonia and encephalopathy were the more immediate causes, which the medical examiner states resulted from the immersion in water and drug intoxication.

Unfortunately, the office notes the autopsy alone could not pinpoint Brown's underlying cause of death due to the long interval between the time she was discovered -- Jan 31, 2015 -- and her subsequent death -- July 26, 2015.

So it's ruling is based "substantially" on the review of Brown's medical records, the results of toxicology tests, investigative records and the "fact that the autopsy did not show any other likely underlying cause of death or reason for Ms. Brown becoming unresponsive," the office added.

As for Brown's manner of death, the agency notes its official finding is undetermined. While Brown's death was "clearly not due to natural causes," it was unable to rule if it was intentional or accidental.

The Fulton County District Attorney's Office and the Roswell Police Department have been provided with copies of the examiner's findings, and both agencies continue to investigate Brown's death.

Brown, the 22-year-old daughter of R&B singers Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston, died July 26, 2015, at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth.

Her death came several months after she was discovered unresponsive inside a bathtub the morning of Jan. 31, 2015, at her Roswell home.
