Fulton School Superintendent To Resign In December

Dr. Jeff Rose, who has been with the Fulton County School System since June 2016, decided not to seek a contract renewal.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Fulton County School Superintendent Dr. Jeff Rose will leave the leadership post he's held for nearly 18 months, a decision that will force school board members to embark on yet another search to find a replacement.

Dr. Rose on Thursday announced his plans not to seek a request to extend his contract with the school system, said FCS spokesperson Cierra Boyd. Dr. Rose cited personal reasons for his decision to resign from the post. His final day with Fulton County Schools will be Dec. 20, the first day of the system's winter break.

"The Board thanks Dr. Rose for his service to Fulton County, and for providing this time to develop a transition plan," said Board President Linda Bryant. "We look forward to working with him to ensure a smooth transition."

The school board’s acceptance came during a called meeting held Thursday to specifically discuss Dr. Rose's contract. Following an executive session, Dr. Rose announced his decision not to seek an extension.

Following his resignation, Dr. Rose will serve as a consultant and provide the School Board and next leader with assistance and guidance throughout the end of the school year, Boyd said.

"I am extremely proud of what has been accomplished over the past two years. It has been an honor to serve FCS," said Dr. Rose. "I encourage everyone to acknowledge the success that has been forged by the men and women who serve Fulton County Schools."

Dr. Rose was brought on in June 2016, several months after the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa, who left FCS in 2015 for a post in Florida. The Fulton County School Board initially offered and Rose accepted a three-year contract, with a $295,000 annual salary.

Before coming to FCS, Dr. Rose was superintendent for five years of the Beaverton School District, which is located just outside of Portland, Oregon. He holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership and a master's degree in Teacher Education from Lewis & Clark College in Oregon and a bachelor's degree in Education from California State University, Long Beach. Before joining Beaverton, he was superintendent of the Canby (Ore.) School District for three years.
