Houze-Hembree Intersection Closure Delayed

Due to rain in this weekend's forecast, the closure will now take place March 31 through April 3.

ROSWELL, GA -- A chance of rain this weekend has forced crews to cancel their plans to close a major Roswell intersection.

Rain is forecast to move into the area on Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March, 25, so the contractor with the Georgia Department of Transportation will postpone construction that will require the closure of the Houze Road-Hembree Road intersection.

The new dates for construction have been scheduled to run from 8 p.m. Friday, March 31 to 5 a.m. Monday, April 3, the city of Roswell said.

The closure is needed so crews can stage construction to shift traffic onto the new roadway of the intersection's partially completed roundabout.

Plans to also relocate stockpiled dirt from Milton to Roswell on Friday in connection to the project will also be delayed to take place in conjunction with the intersection's closure, city of Milton spokesperson Shannon Ferguson told Patch.

During the intersection's closure, traffic will be detoured using S.R. 9/Alpharetta Highway, Highway 92/Crossville Road and Rucker Road. Detour signage will be in place, and Roswell public safety crews oversee traffic flow along the detour route.

The Houze/Hembree roundabout will be one of the first multi-lane roundabouts on a state route. The estimated date of completion is fall 2017.

The primary purpose of the Houze/Hembree roundabout is to relieve congestion and improve safety at the intersection. The project also includes a multi-use trail on the south side of Hembree Road that will connect with the existing trail at Upper Hembree Road.

The construction cost for the Houze/Hembree Roundabout is $4.4 million and is funded by GDOT. The city contributed $353,500 toward preliminary engineering and design and right-of-way acquisition.
