Is The 85/15 Club For You?

I finally got around to re-potting the enormous clay pot that 's been on my back deck for 12 years.  It was one of those giant clay pots you get at Costco.

This past winter's double freeze-thaw-whammy finally did it in. The pot has been breaking in slow motion, cracking and crumbling a bit more each week. Today, as I was transferring the plants and soil to the new pot, I noticed how well I had planted the original with just the right soil mix, and large drainage rocks. I had spent time getting and mixing the right soil components, and had gotten the rocks from the stream in our backyard (which meant I walked down 2 flights of stairs, down a small hill and across the yard and back.)

Why tell you?  As I approach 60, I find that less-than-perfect works pretty darn well.

If you're' in your 30s or 40s, this might not strike a chord yet.  But I literally hear time ticking away.  That's why I want to use every minute as best as I can which usually means keep things simple, including my fitness and nutrition. I employ what we trainers call the 85/15 rule: I aim to eat well and move my body according to plan for 6 out of 7 days a week.  It's enough to keep me strong and healthy.  In fact, it's enough to train for my SF1 Kettle Bell certification.

We are not perfect and life is unpredictable. So we do what we can.  As long as we stay on or close to the path, we're good. The most important thing is to be proud of accomplishing the 85%.  Tell yourself you are doing a great job--because you are.  If you stick with your plan for 85% of the time, whether it's your business plan or your health and fitness plan, you are making incredible progress.

If an 85/15 health and fitness plan sounds like a program you can live with, give me a call (404-435-6367) and we'll get you started.

You can also get on the list for our 30-Day Roswell Challenge coming up September 1.  It's a fundraiser (for NFCC--and a contest!  You commit to moving productively for 30 minutes a day and eating better for 30 days. CoreMatters will guide you the entire month. The 4 winners will be the woman and the man who lose the most inches, and who gain the most strength.  If you're interested, send me an email (annmarie@ourcorematters.com).  Invite a friend and make it interesting!
