Roswell Man Drowns In Great Smoky Mountains

The 59-year-old resident was hiking with some friends Thursday afternoon when he slipped into the water at Abrams Falls.

The body of a Roswell man was recovered Thursday evening in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Park rangers and members of the Blount Special Operations Team found the body of Jitendra Patel, 59, in Abrams Creek around 8:22 p.m. April 29, a press release from the National Parks Service said.

The national agency said Patel, who was hiking with a group of friends, slipped into the water near the waterfall around 12:10 p.m.

Patel was last observed at the water's surface at approximately 12:15 p.m. after friends attempted to pull him from the water.

Park rangers arrived at the scene at 2:08 p.m, but were unable to locate Patel. Divers from the special operations team responded around 5 p.m. to lead the efforts to find Patel's body.

The 2.5 mile hike to Abrams Falls begins from the Abrams Falls trail head, located at the far western end of Cades Cove.
