Drug-Laced Popsicle Roswell Teen Ate Had Opiates: Mom

The Sandy Springs woman told Roswell police that she and her daughter got the treat from a man hauling a cart.

ROSWELL, GA -- A teenager had to be hospitalized late last week after she tested positive for opiates, a development her mother said could only be explained by a cool treat she enjoyed just moment before.

An officer was dispatched to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in Sandy Springs around 3:37 a.m. May 20 and met with a Sandy Springs woman who recounted the incident to authorities.

The woman said she and her 17-year-old daughter were traveling around 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 19 on Alpharetta Highway near the Krispy Kreme shop in Roswell. Traffic was heavy at the time, and the pair were both hot due to the very warm temperatures.

According to the report, they observed a man pushing a cart containing cool treats, and they stopped to get a Popsicle. The mother asked about one flavor, but the vendor told the patron he didn't have that particular one in stock, so she asked for a pineapple-flavored Popsicle.

"The one she received was peach/orange in color, which [the mother] thought was strange," the report states.

Mother and daughter went home and ate the treat and about an hour later, the teen said she was not feeling well. Roughly five minutes later, the girl was "disoriented, confused and vomiting with a swollen tongue," the report notes.

The teen was rushed to the hospital, and the doctor informed the mother that her 17-year-old tested positive for opiates. The mother told police that her daughter had not consumed any other drinks or food in that time period.

Roswell police spokesperson Lisa Holland said the case remains under investigation.

"We aren’t going to discuss the anything about the case until the investigation is completed," she added.
