🌱 Car Thefts From Gas Stations + School Staff To Carry Guns

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Smyrna-Vinings.

Hey, everybody! It's me, Carla Varner, your host of the Daily. Follow along to find out everything you need to know about what's going on in town.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and humid. High: 89 Low: 71.

Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:

  1. Cobb County police warn the public of "sliders" who target and rob gas station customers by sliding, often across the ground, into their vehicles at the pump. The department's ultimate goal is to steal unattended vehicles while the owner is not paying attention. To deter this kind of theft, officers recommend removing your car keys and locking your doors when leaving your vehicle unattended at a local gas station. (CBS 46 News)
  2. The Cobb County school system will now be allowing some non-officers to carry guns, excluding teachers. Cobb County Superintendent Chris Ragsdale announced before Thursday's vote that the district only has 67 officers for its 114 schools. Ragsdale cited veterans and retired police as individuals who might be armed in schools, after a psychological evaluation and approval from a police chief. The vote was split 4-2 along partisan lines by Cobb County school board. (GPB.org)
  3. The parents of an Atlanta baby found dead with cocaine in his system have been charged with murder and cruelty to children. Robert Williams and Makaylee Nevils had originally told police in September of 2021 that they went to sleep around 9:00 a.m., awoke at 11:30 a.m., and found their baby not breathing. Once taken to the hospital, the baby was announced dead upon arrival. (WSB Atlanta)
