🌱 Cobb County Increases Tax Rate + County's COVID-19 Report

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Smyrna-Vinings.

Hi all. It's me, Carla Varner, your host of the Smyrna-Vinings Daily — back in your inbox with all the most important things happening in town these days.I'll get right to it.

First, today's weather:

Humid with a t-storm in spots. High: 85 Low: 69.

Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:

  1. Cobb County has officially posted notice of increasing the county's tax rate. The proposed budget for 2023 does not have an increase in the millage rate, but it does have a 12.63 percent increase in the Cobb tax digest. This, according to state law, constitutes a tax increase. The county must now hold a series of public hearings. The first hearings will be on Jul. 12, Jul. 19, and Jul. 26. (East Cobb News)
  2. Is the current housing market making you feel a little overwhelmed? Patch and Redfin.com have teamed up to create a helpful list of the latest Smyrna-Vinings properties that have hit the market. Click to view the full list of properties that includes prices, photos, and property dimensions. (Smyrna-Vinings Patch)
  3. COVID-19 infection numbers will now be reported weekly by the Georgia Department of Public Health. The numbers were previously reported daily. According to the department, Cobb County experienced 1,639 infection cases over the last two weeks. It is not clear why hospital bed and ventilator reports were not included in this week's report. Are you a Smyrna-Vinings resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
