Wood was born in Cobb County and spent his life in public service; Wood used his financial savvy to finance the construction of what is now WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell, spent 20 years on the Smyrna City Council as the Ward 7 representative, and was a member of a laundry list of local civic organizations.

Wood served as the chairman of Smyrna Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce from 1995-96, spent two years on the chamber’s board, and sat on the board of the Cobb County Hospital Authority from 1962, chairing the organization from 2001-09.

Wood also served in the armed forces, commissioning as a Second Lieutenant with the Army in 1955 and retiring from the reserve with the rank of Colonel after some 30 years of service.

During a 2011 Patch interview, Wood said that helping Smyrna grow into the prosperous and welcoming town it has become was his proudest achievement in office.

“Having an opportunity to be part of that has been very rewarding for me — to see Smyrna grow in people and other ways. Not just growth, but quality growth.”

No services for Wood have been announced yet.
