Here are the top three stories in Smyrna-Vinings today:
- Mike Register, Cobb County's incoming public safety director, identified gangs as a major issue he will face upon assuming his position next month. The former director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation emphasized the importance of community involvement in tackling gang crime, focusing on youth prevention and intervention strategies alongside direct enforcement. Register also noted that some recruiters are using technology to make "gang life" seem more appealing to children, and public safety should "be prepared to respond accordingly" to advances in technology and communications. - The Smyrna Library highlighted the 10 volunteers who helped close out its Teen Volunteer 2023 Summer Service Projects program. Since the end of May, a total of 19 participants spent over 60 hours completing various small projects around the library, including stocking the Friends of Smyrna Library Bookstore each week. Any teens who wish to volunteer in the August Book Sale can do so here. (Friends of Smyrna Library via Facebook)
- The Cliff Jordan Continuing Education Center in Smyrna is offering free classes for adults in the community. The August session will kick off on Monday, Aug. 7, and feature courses such as ESL, Financial Basics, and Spanish Cooking Demonstration.
