Smyrna Rotary/Smyrna Fire/Red-Cross/Crawford & Company provide free smoke detectors

On Saturday, October 11, 2015, nearly 160 volunteers fanned out to select neighborhoods flanking Windy Hill Road in Smyrna. They knocked on hundreds of doors and installed one or two smoke detectors in any home that wanted them. Most were from Atlanta’s Crawford & Company. It was Crawford & Company’s global service day, with projects all across America and in 23 countries.

The project was led by Smyrna Rotarian and Smyrna Fire Chief Roy Acree. In order to do something for its community, and particularly for local Seniors, Smyrna Rotary was quite pleased to participate. It got to drive the vans that dropped off and picked up groups of volunteers. Katie Comer, of the American Red Cross of Georgia says, “We couldn’t have done the installation without you! Most of the homes we installed smoke alarms in this weekend were seniors.”

Adds Chief Acree, “Without question, one of the easiest things we can do to help ensure our personal safety, and that of our families, is to make sure we have operable smoke detectors in our homes. Smoke detectors save lives. This recent partnership of Crawford & Company, Smyrna Fire Department, Smyrna Rotary Club, and the Red Cross is a fantastic example of a community working together to improve home fire safety.”
